With Scottish boxing having spent a period in the doldrums since Scott Harrison’s career imploded almost four years ago, promoter Frank Warren has no doubt that Ricky Burns can rejuvenate the sport north of the border after he became WBO super-featherweight champion on Saturday night with a hard-fought points victory over Puerto Rican Roman Martinez.

There were those who doubted Burn’s ability to box at this level but Warren was not among them. He had confidence that the Scot had the necessary attributes to succeed, and even claimed Burns is now 10 times the fighter after taking the title from Martinez.

Following an engrossing bout, the promoter insisted Burns would become a figurehead in Scotland and lauded the fighter’s attributes. “Ricky is going to prove a renaissance man for not just boxing up here, he will be a new hero for Scottish sport,” said Warren. “He has it all; guts, endeavour and a will to win.”

Indeed, if ever a fighter had to show these qualities it was Burns, who was dropped in the opening round by a huge right hand that threatened to turn his world title dream into a nightmare.

Yet what was so impressive about Burns’ display was the way that he stayed cool under extremely heavy fire. Martinez came to these shores with the reputation of a banger who could dispatch an opponent with either hand, and while Burns could have been forgiven for retreating behind his jab and trying to capitalise on the champion’s lack of lateral movement on the way in, the Scot chose to engage with the Puerto Rican in some exchanges that were as compelling as anything witnessed during the reign of Harrison.

While the Martinez right hand threatened carnage every time it landed, by the midway round Burns had not only shown his ability to put the the first round behind him but rocked the champion with a two-fisted combination at the end of the fifth. Yet for all the variation and accuracy from the challenger and despite the fact a series of vicious uppercuts had Martinez’s jaw shooting vertically, Burns lack of knock-out power at the rarefied level of world-class boxing remained a concern.

Still, the challenger continued to rack up the points but in the seventh round Martinez launched a blistering two-fisted assault that had Burns shaken and relieved to hear the bell.

Yet it was the obdurate Burns’ ability to retaliate from every setback that was starting to gnaw at the core of the champion’s self-belief and will. Successive right hands to the body were clearly draining the champion as the fight moved compellingly into it’s final stretch.

Yet Martinez’s belief in the brutality of his own fists remained and another big finish in the final 30 seconds of the ninth round underlined the danger he posed to the Scot’s ambition.

However, Burns boxed superbly in the 10th session as Martinez became badly ragged and made to look like a novice by the sheer speed of Burns’ jab which, combined with a right hand thrown with renewed and stinging authority, threatened to trap his opponent in a vortex of leather. With Martinez wounded and winded, but still live and dangerous, Burns retained his composure and in the final round lifted his display to exalted heights as a blistering two-fisted salvo threatened to floor Martinez early on.

When it came the points verdict by way of scores of 112-115, 112-115, 113-115, was unanimous, a fact that only highlighted the quality of Burns’ display in the context of what could have been a catastrophic setback in the first round.

The win will also have a number less obvious positives. First, concerns that the 27-year-old does not possess the power to damage opponents at this level must now be dispensed with. The variety, accuracy and head-snapping effect of Burns work with the right hand coupled to his snake-like left jab were complemented by the sheer viciousness of the upper cuts he threw in close-range exchanges against the champion.

Furthermore, Burns showed he has the tactical nous to go with his undoubted skills as he switched from classic work behind his ramrod left jab to furious two-fisted broadsides that undoubtedly surprised Martinez with both their accuracy and power.

Burns’ focus will now shift to a fight with Alex Arthur. The contest has been made all the more enticing after the Edinburgh fighter claimed last week that he was “the only world-class fighter in Scotland”. These remarks undoubtedly were ill-considered but Arthur must surely be given the chance to put up or shut up as no-one can now doubt Burns’ status as a world-class fighter after he successfully neutralised, out-boxed and ended the reign of a crude but truly dangerous world champion.

“The better the opponents that are put in front of me, the better I box,” said Burns. “People have doubted me all my career and I was just determined to prove them wrong. I am always confident in my ability and this was the performance of my life. I think I have proved that I am world class and I just want to enjoy that.”

Warren must also take a bow for the hard-headed manner in which he dealt with Martinez’s constantly changing financial demands that had led to a string of postponements when the fight was originally pencilled in for Puerto Rico last year. His efforts were duly recognised by Burns, who also thanked compatriot John Simpson for providing a fine sparring partner.

Sadly, however, Simpson could not add to the celebrations when he lost his Commonwealth featherweight title and a British title eliminator to Liverpool’s Stephen Smith 117-115, 111-115, 113-115.
